Base words translated literally they mean licence plate (kennzeichen), attachment (befestigung), speed (geschwindigkeit) and control/regulation (regelung) respectively.

Makes perfect sense, really, words that are separate in English just get pasted together in German when describing one thing.

I'm always a bit peeved when anglophones are confuses or amused by the German language. It's just logical to me, and if English were to remove some spaces between words it'd be exactly the same.

I bet it's a lack of exposure to other languages. I've seem people here call very mundane cars 'weird', simply because they're unfamiliar with the brand.
